With the start of the 2018/19 season, 23 clubs are on the verge of surpassing Salzburg to become the most soccer team of the season in the European Cup.
Napoli 1-0 Fiorentina
Sociedad 1-2 Barcelona
Many clubs have the opportunity to beat Salzburg's record last season
Last season, Salzburg qualified for the Champions League, then played in the Europa League and reached the semi-finals of the tournament. In total, they have played 20 consecutive European Cups before losing 2-3 at Marseille in the qualifying round for the top four teams.
Thus, Salzburg equaled the record for a season in continental competition with Bordeaux, Villarreal and Basel. This year, many teams (including Ajax, Bordeaux, Celtic or Sevilla) have a chance to break the record if they reach the final. Of these there are 14 teams just coming in to the Europa League semi-finals to have been able to reach the historic milestone.
The teams can play 23 matches in the European Cup this season: Apollon Limassol, Astana, Celtic, Crvena zvezda *, Dudelange, København, Malmo, Ludogorets, Qarabağ, Rangers, Rosenborg, Sarpsborg, Spartak Trnava, Vidi
The teams can play 21 matches in the European Cup this season: Ajax *, BATE Borisov, Beşiktaş, Bordeaux, Dinamo Zagreb, Genk, PAOK, RB Leipzig, Sevilla, Apollon Limassol, Astana, Celtic, Crvena zvezda *, Dudelange, København, Malmö, Ludogorets, Qarabağ, Rangers, Rosenborg, Sarpsborg, Spartak Trnava, Vidi
* The team that wants to make the record must reach the third goal in the Champions League group stage and reach the Europa League final.
