How does Bayern operate 3-5-2 under Kovac?

New coach Niko Kovac has stated that he is seeking to make Bayern Munich more tactical, including the introduction of the 3-5-2 scheme. So, how does this diagram work under Kovac's hand?

Defending
This will be the most important aspect in this diagram. Kovac is considered a more defensive coach and this will benefit Bayern. One of the problems Bayern faced last season was the ability to keep clean sheets, even if they own the best quality defenders in Europe. Under such circumstances, Kovac needs to create a solid defensive structure.

Kovac has veteran midfielders and quality to deploy the 3-5-2 scheme. Bayern midfield trio will be Mats Hummels, Jerome Boateng and Niklas Suele. Hummels and Boateng are comfortable defenders with the ball in their legs and they will help to build the game from home and even distribute the ball long. With Suele, he showed great ability in the dispute and won back the ball from the opponent.

The only problem that Kovac has to deal with is the depth of midfield. Javi Martinez is the only reserve player. David Alaba and Joshua Kimmich can become one of three central defenders if needed but really, they are not ideal for this position.

Winger
Bayern's choice of winger is clear: Kimmich will assume the right wing corridor while Alaba plays the opposite wing. Both are flexible, agile, young and persistent to fill the wing corridor. The duo also provide excellent attacking ability.

In the last season, Kimmich was outstanding in bringing the width of the attack and the deadly horizontal stretch for Bayern. The German defender has 12 tiers in 29 Bundesliga matches in 2017/18. Meanwhile, Alaba is erratic about the effect of horizontal lines but the Austrian player has the ability to shoot well.

Central midfielder
The middle of the pitch is where the real "rich" Bayern is, with many quality midfielders. Therefore, Kovac will have a "pleasant headache" when selecting three central midfielders in the 3-5-2 scheme. In two positions deep midfielder, Thiago can provide ability to distribute the ball and intercept. The man who could prepare for Thiago was Sebastian Rudy.

Thiago's role as a box-to-box midfielder has many options for Kovac including Corentin Tolissso, Leon Goretzka and Renato Sanches. Ahead of the central midfield duo and behind two strikers, Kovac is able to use a brilliant passing defender James Rodgriguez.

Striker
One of the strikers will be Robert Lewandowski. The rest will depend on the game and the implementation that Kovac wants. Sandro Wagner will assist Lewandowski physically because the German striker is very strong in the possibility of a dispute. Wagner will also be the ideal destination for long balls.

Kovac's other choice is striker Serge Gnabry. This would be bold. Gnabry will provide the dynamics and speed to slip into the empty space behind the opponent, which Lewandowski lacks. Gnabry-Lewandowski will be like England's Sterling-Kane in the 2018 World Cup.
