Roma lost 2-5 to Liverpool in the Champions League semi-final first leg but before that match, an unfortunate incident occurred. A group of Roma fans attacked a Liverpool fan named Sean Cox. The 53-year-old victim was so severely beaten that he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Local police were forced to arrest two people from Rome.
Before the return leg, President Jim Pallotta said: "We have a history of heroism and what some stupid people have done has harmed the reputation of Roma. It's not just Rome, it's Italy, the authorities and all of us, Roma fans do not deserve such reputation because they are the best in the world. Some stupid bastards made us feel ashamed. "
"The Champions League matches are fantastic, but it's not dead," said Liverpool's Sean Cox, "and I do not care about the score. But the video just back to Sean's scene is so disgusting, I wish the best to Sean and his family. "
"The only reason we got to the Barça was because 99.9% of the fans in the Curva Sud area were so great, but now the off-field things make it look funny. It's time for Rome and Italy to change because the violence is happening so much. "
In another move, around 5,000 Liverpool fans will fly to Rome to cheer on the red shirts. Before the incident with Sean Cox, there was a lot of concern about the safety of this large group of fans. Liverpool mayor Steve Rotherham has to say:
"I fear UEFA has learned a lesson about how to organize a poor security in the past, and everybody must know that safety is paramount."
Some Merseyside police officers will also be accompanied by Liverpool fans for security. That is just one of many measures designed to maintain order. There are also organized forbidden areas, moving Liverpool fans to an area, enhancing restrictions on contact with local people ...
